Your 10 Cent Containers Can Help Save Endangered Sea Turtles

Every container you recycle through Containers for Change can do more than reduce landfill - they can help protect one of Queensland’s most loved marine animals: the sea turtle.

Just eight kilometres offshore from Townsville, the Magnetic Island Network for Turtles (MINT) is creating a real impact - using the refunds from 10-cent containers to support vital rescue and rehabilitation efforts for injured and sick turtles.

Across the island, dedicated collection bins are set up at local business and community areas.

Volunteers gather the containers collected and deliver these to the island’s bag drop at Nelly Bay, where they’re redeemed to support MINT.

If you’re wondering whether the refunds really add up, MINT has already raised over $43,800 from container donations alone. Proof that every 10-cent choice matters.

But it’s not just those on the island who can help. Anyone in Queensland can choose to donate their refund to charities, including MINT, using the charity’s member number.

What do your 10c container donations fund?

Each container you donate supports critical aspects of turtle rehabilitation efforts, including:

  • Essential medications and specialised food for recovering turtles

  • Veterinary supplies

  • Medical imaging

Some turtles require more than $10,000 worth of care – so every refund really does count.

In their words: why it matters

“Containers for Change Queensland has been invaluable to our mission”, said MINT spokesperson Traci Ayris.

“It not only provides essential funds for our rehabilitation activities, but it also fosters community engagement and environmental responsibility”

“As we face increasing pressures due to the impacts of global warming and extreme weather events, Containers for Change plays a crucial role in helping us meet the growing demand for sea turtle rescue and care.

“Containers for Change exemplifies how small, everyday actions by a community can produce substantial positive outcomes for both local wildlife and the broader ocean environment.”
