Our Recycling Story
Did you know more than four billion 10¢ containers are sold in Western Australia each year? Since launching in 2020, Containers for Change has more than doubled the State’s 10¢ container recycling rate. This has generated over $21.93M dollars in donations and funding for schools, community groups, businesses, and individuals, and saving billions of 10¢ containers from going to waste.
There’s still more to do. With 530 million containers ending up in general waste each year, Containers for Change continues to drive innovation in container recycling across Western Australia. The Containers for Change App is one of the tools helping participants recycle and return more.

CONTAINERS LIVING ON, AGAIN AND AGAIN.
Once you finish your drink, your 10¢ container’s journey doesn’t end.
Returning your 10¢ container ensures it goes on to live another life.
After being sorted into material types, containers are passed onto accredited recyclers to transform into new containers and other products.
What we do
Containers for Change targets the containers that are commonly littered. This includes plastic and glass bottles, as well as drink cartons, cans and pouches.
We make it easy to get involved with over 314 refund points around WA, you’re never far from a Containers for Change refund point.
Together we can keep 10¢ containers out of general waste, give them another life, and help our community while doing it.
HOW IT WORKS
Thousands of Western Australians, just like you, are recycling their 10¢ containers through Containers for Change.
Each returned and accepted container gives you a 10¢ refund. You can choose to keep the refund — receiving it as cash or as a bank or PayPal transfer — or you can donate it to a local charity, community group, or school.
WHAT HAPPENS TO RETURNED 10¢ CONTAINERS?
Containers for Change works with accredited recyclers to ensure your 10¢ containers are recycled, so they can live another life.
Once you've returned your 10¢ containers, we sort them into their different material types. They're then transported to a processing facility so they can be prepared for recycling.
Accredited recyclers then purchase our recycled material and give them another life as new containers or other products.
Your Impact
Containers for Change creates opportunities to empower individuals, groups and charities to change their community. These are their stories
K9 Dog Rescue
With annual vet bills of more than $100,000, in addition to food, kennel maintenance, and cleaning equipment, K9 Rescue relies on donations from the community to care for and re-home its four-legged residents — like Georgie pictured here.
Churchlands Primary School
The school has a strong environment and sustainability program led by teacher Sheree Samsa, with 35 Year 5 environmental officers actively caring for and managing the vegetable garden, frog garden, chickens, composting, worms, recycling, waste as well as building environmental and sustainability awareness within the school community.
